The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
